Velma Eileen (Malicoat) Peery

August 6, 1919 ~ December 7, 2017 (age 98)


            Mrs. Joe (Velma) Peery, 98, of Wellsville, passed away at 2:54 p.m., Thursday, December 7, 2017 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Audrain in Mexico, Missouri. 

            Velma Eileen Malicoat was born August 6, 1919 near New Florence, Missouri, a daughter of William Lee and Lena Rivers Hunter Malicoat.  She was raised in the New Florence and Wellsville area and attended White Side School near New Florence and White Hall School near Wellsville.  She graduated from Mexico High School in 1938. 

            On December 16, 1939 in Mexico, Missouri, she married Joe David Peery.  They were married almost 68 years before he preceded her in death on November 14, 2007.  Other survivors include a son, Curtis Dale Peery and his wife, Tina; three grandsons, Ryan Peery, Robin Peery and Timothy Wilson; granddaughter, Laura Peterson; step-grandson, Matthew Harrington; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; in addition to several nieces and nephews.

            She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe David Peery; daughter and son-in-law, Marcia Lee and Richard Wilson; two sisters, Mabel Ellen Wegener and Leota Rivers Debo; two brothers, Jesse W. Malicoat and Owen A. Malicoat and two sisters-in-law, Kate and Anna Malicoat.

            Mrs. Peery had worked at Wellsville-Middletown R-1 High School as a cook and janitor for over 21 years, retiring in 1982.  She had also worked for Dr. Byland in the home and as a receptionist in the office. 

            She was a member of the Wellsville United Methodist-Presbyterian Church where she served as Lords Acre Pie Chairman for several years and was very active in the Clothes Closet.  Mrs. Peery was a former member of Modern Woodman of America.

            Mrs. Peery enjoyed vegetable gardening and cooking for her family. One of her families’ favorites was her fried chicken and butterhorn rolls.  She spent a lot of time taking care of family members and friends.

            Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 11, 2017 at the Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville.  Rev. Bill Debo officiated.  Serving as organist was Cleta Mertz.

            Burial was in the Wellsville Cemetery in Wellsville, Missouri.  Serving as pallbearers were Rick Espen, Dennis Lehnen, John Scott, Rodney Scott, Phil Shocklee and David Whitehead.  Honorary pallbearers were John Maskey and Roger Scott. 

            Visitation was held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service, Monday, at the funeral home.

            Memorial contributions were suggested to the Wellsville Cemetery Association or the charity of the donor’s choice c/o Myers Funeral Home, 203 East Bates Street, Wellsville, MO 63384.
