Essie Hortense Whitehead, 100, of Wellsville, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at St Andrews of New Florence with her daughter by her side.
Hortense was born July 11, 1918, in Upper Loutre Township in Montgomery County, Missouri, a daughter of Robert Jackson Staten and Bessie Adams (Norris) Staten.
On November 20, 1937, in Eolia, Missouri, she married Robert Owen Whitehead, sharing over 63 years of marriage together. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2001.
Hortense had a love for life. A farmers wife, she enjoyed the beauty of nature and excelled in homemaking skills. She especially enjoyed the flowers and arranging them. An active member of the Wellsville Christian Church, she also belonged to Garden Club and her Neighborhood Club. Of all things, family was closest to her heart—immediate, extended, church, Twin Oaks, O’Fallon and St Andrews where her long and full life ended on this earth.
Her indomitable spirit was an inspiration to her family and many others, her door was always open and she will be missed but not forgotten.
Hortense is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Robert Bell, of Lake St. Louis; son-in-law John Mudd, of Hermann; 5 grandchildren and spouses, Cynthia Kuhn of Sunset Hills, Andrew (Christie) Bell, of Fenton, Sara (John) English, of Chesterfield, Jeffry (Alicia) Mudd, of Decatur, Illinois, and Kelly (Ellis) Brister of O’Fallon; 15 great-grandchildren, Bea and Ben Kuhn, of Sunset Hills, Amelia and Blake Bell, of Fenton, Christina, Jack, Henry and Rebekah English, of Chesterfield, Katy (Mark) Austin, of Waterman, Illinois, Elizabeth (Stan) Kotus, of Yorkville, Illinois, Rachel (Gary) Stover, of Indianapolis, Indiana, James Mudd, of St Louis, Jack Mudd, of Decatur, Illinois, Dacey and Cade Brister, of O’Fallon; and 11 great-great-grandchildren, William, Annabelle, Grant, Ellenmarie, Margaret, Levi, Amelia, Ruby and Violet Austin and Julianna and Scarlet Kotus. She is also survived by her nieces, Betty Hirschmugl and Carol Utt, nephews Wayne Clark and Butch Staten; great nieces Shelly Pottoff, Julie Morse, Karen Sherman, Kathy Klages, and Tina Arens; great nephews Mike Phillips, Mike Utt, Rick Staten, Chris and Mark Staten; in addition to many great-great-nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Bessie; husband, Robert Owen Whitehead; daughter Jacqueline “Jackie” Mudd; brothers George Staten and Ray Shelbourne Staten and sister, Garnet Byers.
Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville. Rev. Mike Carmi officiated. Serving as organist was Eldora Lowry. Special music was provided by Jim and Nancy Dunn.
Visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service, Monday, at the funeral home.
Burial was in the Wellsville Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Andy Bell, Cody Berkbigler, Ellis Brister, Chris Davis, Jeff Mudd and Rick Staten. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Clark, Roger Scott, Butch Staten and Don Whitehead.
