Marilyn Edith (Barclay) Schuler

May 7, 1940 ~ May 18, 2018 (age 78)

                Marilyn Edith Schuler, 78, of Martinsburg, Missouri, passed away Friday, May 18, 2018, at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Audrain in Mexico, Missouri, with her family by her side.

                Mrs. Schuler was born May 7, 1940 in Berkley, Missouri, a daughter of Joseph Henry and Edith Mabel (Amelong) Barclay. She was a 1957 graduate of Hazelwood High School. 

                On October 21, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bridgeton, Missouri, she married Robert Charles “Bob” Schuler, sharing over 56 years together. They have lived in the Martinsburg area for over 32 years.

                Marilyn was the bookkeeper/secretary for Midland Ford Tractor Company in Hazelwood from 1957-1963. She was a homemaker most of her life. For many years, Marilyn sewed and altered attire for Victoria’s Bridal and Formal Wear in Jefferson City. She was an expert seamstress, sewing her daughter’s clothes and wedding dresses, and for many family and friends. When her children were in 4-H, she taught sewing as a 4-H leader. Quilting was a special joy for Marilyn and she made many quilts.

                Marilyn was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Ladies Sodality, St. Joseph Choir, St. Joseph Quilt Club and other quilt groups, Circle of Friends in Martinsburg and the Tuesday morning coffee group with women.

                She was known as the Slaw Queen, making “Marilyn’s Slaw” for many events. She was a master canner and loved spending time in the kitchen. More than anything, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren. 

                Marilyn is survived by her husband, Robert Charles “Bob” Schuler, of the home in Martinsburg; three daughters, Denise Fennewald and husband, Chris, of Jefferson City, Cheryl Becker and Marc Steckel, of Carrollton, Illinois, and Vicki Schuler and Jason Schneider, of Hermann; grandchildren, Lauren (Fennewald) Gilbert and husband, Ross, of Jefferson City, Kristen Fennewald, of Denver, Colorado, Ty Becker, of Martinsburg, and Cheyenne Becker, of Carrollton, Illinois; great-granddaughter, Ali Gilbert, of Jefferson City; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Gail Barclay, of Ocala, Florida; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Christine Barclay, of Hazelwood, Bill Schuler, of Marthasville, Beth Schuler, of Waverly, Iowa and Tom and Kathy Schuler, of Belle.

                She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Frank Barclay; sister-in-law, Molly Schuler; and brother-in-law, Ken Schuler.

                Visitation was held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 21, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg. 

                Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the church. Monsignor Jack Schuler and Deacon Ron Deimeke officiated. Serving as organist was Ruth Wilson.  Soloist was Lydia Hale. Cantor was Brenda Hale.  Readers for the Mass were Maureen Brown and Lisa Peterson.  Offertory gifts were presented by her granddaughters and great-granddaughter, Lauren Gilbert, Kristen Fennewald, Cheyenne Becker and Ali Gilbert. 

                Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, south of Martinsburg. Serving as pallbearers were Rick Barclay, John Becker, Ty Becker, Gib Phillips, Linus Rothermich and Jeff Schuler.

                Services were under the direction of Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville.
