Mary Jane Brooks, 87, of Martinsburg, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019 at The King’s Daughters Home in Mexico, with her loving family by her side.
Mrs. Brooks was born December 15, 1931 in Mexico, Missouri, a daughter of Floyd William and Edith Matilda (Roppel) Riutcel.
On December 23, 1956 at the Martinsburg Community Church, she married Howard Wayne Brooks. They were the parents of three children and shared over 62 years of marriage together.
Jane was a graduate of Martinsburg High School. She continued her education at Central Methodist College in Fayette and then later transferred to the University of Missouri - Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. After graduation, she went to work at the Cerebral Palsy School in St. Louis. In 1956, she became a school teacher at Martinsburg School.
Jane and Howard have lived at their present home since 1980. They lived in Montgomery City from 1970-1980 and in St. Louis prior to that.
In 1970, Jane and Howard purchased Friedman Picture Frame Company in Martinsburg, from Jane’s parents, working there until 1990. Jane was a piano teacher in each of the towns she lived in, teaching children of all ages.
Jane was a member of the Martinsburg Community Church, where she had played the organ for many years. She was also the former organist for the Montgomery City United Methodist-Presbyterian Church. Jane was a former member of P.E.O.
Jane was very artistic, she enjoyed creating stained glass, ceramics and tole painting. She loved to cook, having an annual Thanksgiving feast, making her award winning pies and homemade yeast rolls. Jane and was an accomplished seamstress, even making her own wedding dress.
In later years, Jane wrote the book, Lilac Lane, telling about her childhood and growing up on a farm in Martinsburg. She dedicated the book to her grandchildren.
A dedicated wife, loving mother, wonderful grandmother, woman of faith and talented musician, will be missed by all those who loved her.
Jane is survived by her husband, Howard Wayne Brooks, of the home in Martinsburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda and David Cook, of New Boston and Lisa and Craig Brandt, of Martinsburg and three grandchildren, Carrie James and husband, Everett, of Nashville, Sylvia Modesitt, of Los Angeles, California and Clayton Brandt, of Martinsburg.
She was preceded in death by her son, Randall Wayne Brooks; parents, Floyd and Edith Riutcel and brother, Don Riutcel.
Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Martinsburg Community Church. Rev. Justin Keith officiated. Special music on the bagpipe was provided by Dana DeWeese.
Visitation was held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service, Thursday, at the church.
Burial was in the Wellsville Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Charlie Bigelow, Donn Brooks, Keane Brooks, Darus Love, Ron Talley and Kenny Whalen. Honorary pallbearers were Dana Brooks, Arlie Reinwald, Gary Roppel and John Swaim.
Services were under the direction of the Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville.
