Herbert Lee "Herb" Meyer, 89, of Wellsville, passed away at 1:07 p.m., Monday, November 28, 2016 at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
Mr. Meyer was born October 3, 1927, in Mexico, Missouri, a son of Frank Earl and Ella Mae (Sankpill) Meyer.
Herb served his country in the United States Army as a Corporal, during the Korean War, entering on August 19, 1952 and being honorably discharged on May 18, 1954. He was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
On February 6, 1954, in Montgomery City, Missouri, he married Sue Ann Cunningham. She preceded him in death on April 5, 2005.
Herb had lived at his current residence since 1954 and in Wellsville all of his life.
He was a farmer, raising row crops, cattle and hogs. Herb also hauled fertilizer for VC Fertilizer Company as well as hauled cattle to St. Louis.
Herb was a lifetime member of Wellsville V.F.W. Post 3056 and Martinsburg American Legion Post 552.
He really enjoyed going to auctions, especially cattle auctions and farm sales. Herb loved animals, his favorite were cats and dogs. He liked playing cards, primarily pitch and pinochle. Some of his favorite times were visiting with friends up at Casey's to drink coffee and grab a donut as well as going to Carmichael's to catch up with the guys. In earlier years, he loved going dancing with his wife, Sue. Most of all, Herb enjoyed all of his holiday dinners spent with his kids and grandkids.
Herb is survived by his children, James Lee Meyer, of Wellsville, Cathy Marie Merrick, of Fulton, David Wayne Meyer, of Wellsville and Frank Edward Meyer and wife, Debbie, of Wellsville; grandchildren, Stephanie Hampton, of Fulton, Jamie and Natalie Meyer, of Linn Creek, Jessi and Brandy Meyer, of Mexico, Sarah and Chris Santora, of Bloomington, Indiana, Casey and Justin Bargo, of St. Louis, Chris and Stephanie Meyer, of Wellsville, Faith and Dean Light, of Wellsville, Allison and Mason Talley, of Mexico, Brian and Amanda Haberthier, of Attica, New York and Beth Haberthier, of Mexico; 11 great-grandchildren with 3 on the way and brother and sister-in-law, Clarence Henry "Newt" and Joyce Meyer, of Wellsville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Ann Meyer; parents, Frank and Ella Meyer and a sister Melba Marie May.
Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville. Rev. John Foster officiated. Full Military Honors were provided by the Wellsville V.F.W. Post 3056. Missouri Military Funeral Honors folded and presented the U.S. Flag.
Visitation was held from 12:00 noon until the time of service, Thursday, at the funeral home.
