Janette Grossmann, 89, of Wellsville and formerly of rural Laddonia, died on June 21, 2023 at King's Daughters Home in Mexico, Mo.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Wellsville. Burial will be in the Resurrection Catholic Church Cemetery following the Mass.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 26 at Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville.

Janette was born Sept. 23, 1933 the daughter of Henry and Anna (Ahrens) Aulbur. She married Walter Grossmann on April 19, 1954 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg. He preceded her in death on August 18, 1993.

She was a person who loved people and serving her community. She was a member of GFWC Studere Club for almost 50 years where she enjoyed lifelong friendships and supporting the Wellsville community. In 1976, with the backing of Studere Club members, she decided to run for the Wellsville-Middletown R-1 school board. It was a write-in campaign and she was elected with 222 votes. This caused Studere to move their meeting night, as it now conflicted with the school board meeting. She was known to enjoy a good debate. On the board she always spoke up and was not afraid to ask questions. She served as the first woman on the school board from 1976 to 1982. She also was the first woman Board President and served in that role from 1977 to 1980.

Other local organizations she served in leadership roles were:  Wellsville Senior Citizens, Friends of the Library, Resurrection Church Altar Society and was a 4-H leader teaching photography and sewing.

She enjoyed travel as she went to Germany three times with her husband Walter to see his parents and his sister's family. She also traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Italy, France, England and Austria.

She loved her family and is survived by her daughters, Susan (Willis) Kleinsorge, Laddonia, Peggy (Ralph) Haufle, St. Peters, Judy (Richard) Steward, Hewitt, Texas, Heidi (Brian) Holland, Cape Girardeau; son, Stephen Grossmann, Perry; foreign exchange student, Eridan de Souza, Juiz de Fora, Brazil; her sister Agnes Bertels, Mexico, Mo.; brother-in-law Don Nichols, Vandalia and 11 grandchildren, Matthew Steward, Tacoma Washington, Randy (Susan) Steward, Lexington, Kentucky, James (Ashley) Steward, Waco, Texas, David (Melody) Kleinsorge, Boonville, Andrea Kleinsorge, Miami, Mo.; Jocelyn Haufle, St. Peters, Carl Haufle, St. Peters, Anthony (Mary) Holland, Cape Girardeau; Kayla Holland and fiancé Tyler Michie, Warrensburg; Mackenzie (John) Arnett, Hannibal; Conner Grossmann and fiancé Katie Mitchell, O'Fallon, Mo. Also eight great-grandchildren: Rosalie, John and Christian Kleinsorge, Oliver and Theodore Steward, Isaac, Hannah and Petra Holland and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; sisters Mary Ann Brinker and Estelle Nichols; and brothers Richard and Raymond Aulbur.
