Joan M. Slavens, 87, of Wellsville, passed away at 12:24 p.m., Sunday, February 13, 2022, at St. Andrews at New Florence.

Funeral services will be at noon on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville with Rev. Dawn Gerard officiating. Burial will follow in the Laddonia Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Joan was born on August 3, 1934, in Buell, Missouri. She was the daughter of George Arthur Dunbar and Elizabeth Stone (Williams) Dunbar. On June 13, 1953, in Wellsville, she married Ed Slavens. Mr. Slavens preceded her in death on May 1, 2017.

Mrs. Slavens was a homemaker and farm wife. In addition to raising the children and helping Ed with the farm she enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, needlepoint, and quilting. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church of Wellsville.

Survivors include four sons, Scotty Slavens, of Wellsville, Jim Slavens, of Wellsville, John Slavens, of Sahuartia, Arizona, and Ray Slavens, of Ottumwa, Iowa; two daughters, Brenda Guerra, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Sandy Uthe (Gary), of Wellsville; one brother, Alan Dunbar (Diana), of Wellsville; two sisters, Bettie Smith, of High Ridge, Missouri, and Margie Vedder, of Wellsville; nine grandchildren, Scott Slavens, Rebecca Guerra, Sarah Guerra, Jeremy (Allison) Guerra, Christian (Kayla) Uthe, Zackary (Crystal) Uthe, Josh (Lauren) Purcell, Elizabeth (Josh Brink) Slavens, and Brad (Kaylee Springer) Slavens; 17 great grandchildren, Wesley (Andrea) Slavens, Adessa (Bryan) Lovell, Brett May, Barron (Kaitlyn) May, Lorenzo Guerra, Vincent Guerra, Phillip Guerra, Liam Guerra, Scarlett Guerra, Rylee Uthe, Adaline Uthe, Lane Uthe, Keegan Purcell, Kaeden Purcell, Alexandria Brink, Aeryn Brink, and one on the way; five great-great grandchildren, Wyatt and Maverick Slavens, Lyla and Alanna Lovell, and one on the way.

In addition to her husband Ed, she was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter, Kitty Slavens May, and one sister, Madge Whyte.
