Mary Jewell Hughes, 85, of Martinsburg, passed away Friday December 29, 2023, at Pin Oaks Living Center in Mexico.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday January 4, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg with Father Derek Hooper officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery in Millwood, Missouri.

Visitation will be Wednesday January 3, 2024, from 3-6 p.m. with a Rosary at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Myers Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Mary was born February 1, 1938, in Olney, Missouri. She was the daughter of Roy and Sophie (Meuth) Mudd. On June 15, 1963, in White Church, Missouri, she married James David Hughes, who preceded her in death on March 27, 2013.

Mary had worked as a Nurses Aid at Gamma Road for over 35 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsburg. She was a sports fan, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. She enjoyed reading and spending time with family. She could often be found sitting on the porch with a cold beer, plain chips, and Oreo cookies.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Robert "Tom" Hughes, of Bowling Green; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Carline (Jimmy), of Martinsburg; one sister, Nora Belle Witte, of Troy; three grandchildren, Katie Jean Carline, of Martinsburg, Avery Burdette Carline, of Martinsburg, and Jackson Patrick Hughes, of Curryville; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents;  two sisters, Nadine Bastean, and Sultana Mudd; four brothers, Jake Mudd, Billy Carr Mudd, Pat Mudd and Roy Mudd; and two infant brothers.

The family suggests memorial gifts to St. Joseph Catholic Church for masses, or to the St. Alphonsis Catholic Cemetery. They may be sent in care of Myers Funeral Home, 203 E. Bates Street, Wellsville, MO 63384.
