William Edward "Bill" Hartwig, 77, of Middletown passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital – Lake Saint Louis, Missouri.
Mr. Hartwig was born December 7, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of William Adolph and Katherine Elizabeth (Merkler) Hartwig.
He was a 1961 graduate of Wright City High School. Bill continued his education at Ranken Technical College in St. Louis, graduating in 1963.
Bill had lived in Middletown since 2001. Prior to that, he lived at Hawk Point since the 1970's.
Bill was a farmer, raising pigs, cattle and row crops. He also did custom hay baling. Bill had worked for Crown Homes in St. Louis as a draftsman, drawing up house plans for individuals. He then worked for Dulin-Harrell Lumber in Hawk Point where he drew up the plans and also figured all the material that would be needed. Bill had previously worked for Mordt Tractor in Troy, putting together implements.
He was an avid outdoorsman and loved farming, cutting wood and gardening. Bill loved working jigsaw puzzles, the more pieces the better and he never looked at the picture on the box before doing a puzzle. In Bill's lifetime, he had built 14 big farm wagons.
Bill is survived by his son, William Andrew "JR" Hartwig and Tabitha Thornhill, of Middletown; daughter and son-in-law, Catherine Jeanne and Jeff Newman, of St. Charles and grandchildren, Sophia Rose Hartwig, of Middletown and Leah Katherine Newman and Joshua Scott Newman, of St. Charles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Katherine Hartwig and sister, Barbara Elizabeth Gerdeman.
At Bill's request, there will be no services.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Myers Funeral Home in Middletown.
