Nellie Marie Cox McWhorter, aged 97, of Wellsville, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2020 at the hospital in Mexico, Missouri.
Nellie was born September 17, 1923 in Bangor, Iowa, a daughter of Ralph G. and Lucille Loretta (Banks) Cox. On June 22, 1944 she married Edward “Ed” McWhorter in Alton, Illinois. They shared over 60 years of marriage together and were the parents of three children, Phillip, Roger and Karen. Ed preceded her in death on April 8, 2005.
Nellie lived most of her life in the Wellsville area and was a member of the Bible Holiness Church of New Florence. She was the 3rd child of 6 in her family; there were two older sisters and three younger brothers. As a child during the Great Depression, she learned many skills such as quilting, garment construction, mending, and gardening—traditions that she continued her entire life. One of her joys was keeping a large strawberry patch as did her mother before her. Idleness was never a part of her life. Nellie made many beautiful quilts and completed countless sewing projects for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as members of the community. If asked, she would modestly say that it was just something that she liked to do.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Phillip Edward and Cindy McWhorter of Springville, Utah; daughter Karen Ann McWhorter Puricelli of Frontenac, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Patty McWhorter, of Lowry City, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Lucille Cox; husband, Edward McWhorter; son Roger Eugene McWhorter; son-in-law Christopher Puricelli; sisters, Lora Mae Parsons and Lillian Lavonia Davis and brothers, Ralph G. Cox, Jr., Marion Eugene “Shorty” Cox and Earl Webster Cox.
Graveside services were at 11:00 am., Friday, September 25, 2020 at the Fairmount Cemetery in Middletown. Rev. Sammy Lorton officiated. Special music was provided by Mrs. Carol Lorton. Serving as pallbearers were Dylan Puricelli, Warren McWhorter, Matthew Bernstein, Jerry Fischer, Becky Lewis, Stephanie Touch and Kathleen Jennings.
